What is World Salt Awareness Week?

World Salt Awareness Week is run by Action on Salt and aims to help raise awareness of the damaging effect of too much salt in our diet to our health.

Why is Too Much Salt Bad?

Salt contains high levels of sodium. Having a high level of sodium in your diet has been linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, which can lead to many serious health problems.

Health Benefits

Reducing the amount of sodium in your diet offers many health benefits, it can:

  1. Lower your blood pressure
  2. Reduce your risk of heart disease
  3. Lower your LDL cholesterol
  4. Prevent congestive heart failure
  5. Decrease your risk of kidney damage
  6. Prevent your chance of having a stroke
  7. Lessen the chance of a brain aneurysm
  8. Lower your risk of dementia
  9. Reduce the chance of kidney stones
  10. Lower your risk of developing stomach cancer

Salt Reduction Tips

  1. Check the nutritional information on food labels before you buy them and try to choose items that have reduced or lower levels of salt.
  2. Only add salt when cooking when absolutely necessary. A lot of the food we buy has already had salt added to it. Eventually, your taste buds will get accustomed to less salty flavours.
  3. Flavour your food with pepper, herbs, garlic, spices, chillies or lemon juice instead.
  4. If it is necessary to add salt, use reduced-sodium salt where posible.
  5. Cook from scratch as much as possible, it is a lot easier to monitor the amount of salt you are consuming this way. Watch out for cooking sauces and seasonings like soy sauce as these tend to contain high levels of salt.
  6. Swap salty snacks such as crisps and salted nuts with plain nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables.
  7. Avoid food such as bacon, cheese, takeaways, ready meals and other processed foods as much as possible.
